The filter principle: water flows from top to bottom through a filter bed. Any impurities larger than the space between the sand grains are retained. Over time, the top layer becomes impermeable (inlet pressure increases - filter flow decreases) and the filter must be cleaned by backwashing. Besides using sand, you can also use glass media. The advantages are: no biofilm, you use fewer chemicals, water consumption decreases, and the lifespan of the glass is as long as your filter itself. It's definitely worth considering!
